02 · Filling

Decay is removed, the tooth is filled in its own shade.

For small and medium areas of decay, the affected tissue is removed and the cavity is closed in layers with tooth-coloured composite.

  • Inlay / onlay

03 · Root canal

Root canals are cleaned and filled.

When infection reaches the nerve, the canals are cleaned, shaped and sealed. The aim is to keep the tooth in your mouth.

04 · Crown

A crown completes the tooth.

If a lot of tooth structure has been lost, the tooth is protected with a custom-made crown. A bridge may be planned where teeth are missing. Which option suits you is decided at your examination.

  • Zirconia crown
  • All-ceramic crown
  • Bridge

Commonly called zirconium crowns, these restorations are made from zirconia ceramic. A crown covers a prepared tooth to restore its shape and support an agreed functional or aesthetic goal.

Planned around your needs

Material selection depends on the tooth’s condition, position, bite and desired appearance. Tooth shade, surface detail and shape should be considered together, rather than choosing brightness alone.

What treatment may involve

The tooth is prepared, records are taken and the crown is made to fit. Your dentist checks fit, bite and appearance before final placement and discusses concerns you raise.

What to understand before deciding

Preparation removes tooth tissue and is irreversible. Possible issues include sensitivity, damage to the tooth’s pulp, fracture, loss of retention and decay around the crown. Crowns require maintenance and may need replacement.

Are zirconium crowns suitable for every smile makeover?

No. Some teeth may benefit from a different material or a more conservative option. A crown should have a clear clinical rationale.
